Automated detection of sleep spindles in the scalp EEG and estimation of their intracranial current sources: comments on techniques and on related experimental and clinical studies
نویسندگان
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Sleep spindles are short bursts of sleep EEG activity in the range of 11–15Hz, reflecting central nervous system integrity and considered to promote sleep continuity, learning and memory consolidation processes. This contribution comments on the automated detection of sleep spindles and their intracranial sources, as well as on experimental and clinical studies for the characterization of spindles and their sources, and the study of their functional significance. Supporting literature is provided wherever appropriate, although comprehensive review is out of the scope of this opinion paper.

Divergent Cortical Generators of MEG and EEG during Human Sleep Spindles Suggested by Distributed Source Modeling
BACKGROUND Sleep spindles are approximately 1-second bursts of 10-15 Hz activity, occurring during normal stage 2 sleep. In animals, sleep spindles can be synchronous across multiple cortical and thalamic locations, suggesting a distributed stable phase-locked generating system. The high synchrony of spindles across scalp EEG sites suggests that this may also be true in humans. However, prior M...
متن کاملK-Complex Detection Based on Synchrosqueezing Transform
K-complex is an underlying pattern in the sleep EEG. Due to the role of sleep studies inneurophysiologic and cognitive disorders diagnosis, reliable methods for analysis and detection of this patternare of great importance. In our previous work, Synchrosqueezing Transform (SST) was proposed for analysisof this pattern. SST is an EMD-like tool, which benefits from wavelet transform and reallocat...
متن کاملIndependent Component Analysis for Source Localization of EEG Sleep Spindle Components
Sleep spindles are bursts of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) quasirhythmic activity within the frequency band of 11-16 Hz, characterized by progressively increasing, then gradually decreasing amplitude. The purpose of the present study was to process sleep spindles with Independent Component Analysis (ICA) in order to investigate the possibility of extracting, through visual analysis of the sp...
متن کاملMagnetoencephalography demonstrates multiple asynchronous generators during human sleep spindles.
Sleep spindles are approximately 1 s bursts of 10-16 Hz activity that occur during stage 2 sleep. Spindles are highly synchronous across the cortex and thalamus in animals, and across the scalp in humans, implying correspondingly widespread and synchronized cortical generators. However, prior studies have noted occasional dissociations of the magnetoencephalogram (MEG) from the EEG during spind...
متن کاملEffect of Valerian on Sleep Disorder in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review
Introduction: Menopause-related sleep problems do not necessarily affect the amount of sleep but also the quality of sleep. The most likely mechanism of action of valerian on sleep is its effect on GABA receptors. The aim of this study was to summarize the results of clinical trials on the effect of valerian on sleep disorders in postmenopausal women by systematic review. Materials and Methods...
